Dr. David Rieder brings a rich interdisciplinary background to the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) program, blending literature, philosophy, rhetoric, and digital media into his teaching and research. Originally from Long Island, NY, Dr. Rieder completed his undergraduate studies in Literature and Creative Writing at SUNY Purchase before earning both his MA and PhD from UT Arlington. His academic journey transitioned from philosophy to rhetoric under the mentorship of Victor Vitanza, a pivotal influence who guided him toward a deeper exploration of writing, rhetoric, and critical theory.
Currently, Dr. Rieder’s research focuses on the intersection of digital rhetoric and emerging technologies, particularly Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and Claude. His most recent project, a workshop series funded by an NC Foundation grant, explores how LLMs can enhance research and teaching in the humanities and social sciences. Designed for CHASS students, faculty, and staff, the series introduces innovative ways to integrate AI into academic work while fostering critical engagement with digital tools.
Dr. Rieder has taught MALS 501, “Rhetorical Style: On the Page and in the Street,” during the past two summers and will continue teaching it in Summer 2024. The course evolves with each iteration, examining rhetorical style across texts, speeches, interactive media, and the postmodern “experience economy.” His experience with MALS students has been deeply rewarding, as he appreciates their diverse perspectives and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary inquiry.
Interdisciplinarity is at the core of Dr. Rieder’s academic approach. He values the creative and intellectual possibilities that emerge when ideas from different fields converge. Whether blending his interests in the creative arts and computing or developing new research methodologies, he sees interdisciplinary thinking as a powerful driver of innovation and discovery.
Outside academia, Dr. Rieder has a unique background that informs his perspective. He graduated from the New York Military Academy (NYMA) and later served in the U.S. Army Reserve, an experience that shaped his discipline and resilience. Additionally, he is an avid competitive cyclist, specializing in gravel racing and fondos—an aspect of his life that keeps him grounded and focused.
Dr. Rieder remains committed to supporting and engaging with MALS students, fostering an environment where interdisciplinary exploration thrives. His dedication to research, teaching, and mentorship ensures that students in the program continue to benefit from his expertise and enthusiasm for bridging diverse fields of knowledge.
